Headlines: A dual function

A1 story raw headline to fit one column rail: Rock Island Dam Spillway shut down as investigations continue into death continue.

Visual cues: Where? (kicker); what? (headline); why? (subhead). More information in a glance than reading a long line of text in the same paragraph style. Recognizing that text is both content and a graphic element on the page is an effective tool to help organize information quickly on the page or reflexively add humor (or awareness) to either a story or a photo. It may also help with space issues.
